Marcelo Vasquez lives in Tocaña, an Afro-Bolivian community. He participates in TAFA Ambulante Workshop, an art workshop designed to exchange cultural knowledge and generate dialogue over the rights of vulnerable communities to express themselves and be represented.

She has released several original trap songs in her ancestral language of Quechua, whose lyrics address racism faced by indigenous communities in Peru. La Conferencia de Organizaciones Afrocolombianas interviews leaders from different regions of Colombia who tell us about the effects of racial discrimination on the Afro-Colombian population's ethnic-racial self-recognition and self-esteem. They also share their views on the importance of allowing communities to reaffirm the identity and pride of the Afro-Colombian people in order to assert their dignity, bring the injustices of racism to light, and contribute to the recognition of ethnic differences. SieteNueve is part of the first generation of underground, independent rappers in Puerto Rico. The lyrical content of the songs and their commitment to social change distinguishes SieteNueve from other artists. SieteNueve says that "...our culture is much more African than what people think. Our Spanish has an African vocabulary, the food we eat, the religion. What the black people that came from Africa contributed to Puerto Rico is impregnated in our culture, and it’s vital. It’s what [differentiates] us from others – how we dance, how we play the drums". In the song Afrocaribenos (developed for LS212), he talks about identity and celebrates how African black people contributed to the Puertorican culture.

Vogue also released a short video where Yalitza talks about her past dreams and her family. She says that your appearance/skin color shouldn’t determine whether or not you’re a star: “Stereotypes that only one type of person can aspire to be in a movie or on the cover of a magazine are being broken. They’re getting to know other faces from Mexico and that’s something that makes me so happy and proud of my roots.” This reading/video (developed for LS 212) reflects on race, beauty sterotypes, discrimination, representation, and the role of the media.

Película 7 Cajas
7 Boxes is a Paraguayan thriller directed by Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schémbori. The film was released in 2012 and received praise from critics, as well as breaking box office records in Paraguayan cinemas. 7 Boxes won the "Films in Progress" competition in what was the first unanimous decision in the festival's history. Part of the film is spoken in Guaraní, the indigenous language in Paraguay, which brings global visibility to a historically marginalized community. Afroversiva is a collective of poets serving as a contestatory voice towards the social demands of the black population of Puerto Rico. This artistic collaboration formed when the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter surfaced to join the resistance movements fighting against the invisibility, prejudice and racism that also impacts the Afro-Puerto Rican population. The group uses poetry, music and words as their weapon to promote healing and justice for the Afro-descendents on the islands.

Rubén Rada is a Uruguayan percussionist, composer, and singer. He is closely associated with candombe, a style of music and dance that immigrated to Uruguay with enslaved Africans. His song "Quien va a cantar" is perfect for teaching the subjunctive in adverbial clauses.
Me gritaron “negra”, Victoria Santa Cruz
Victoria Santa Cruz (1922-2014), was an afro- peruvian choreographer, poet and activist. She is known for her visual, lyrical poem Me gritaron negra (They Shouted Black At Me), show cased in the exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985 and at the Brooklyn Museum. This piece became prominent because of its social commentary on race, racism, and prejudice amongst the Latinx community in regards to Afro-Peruvians.
